At Compassionate Nest, we recognize that research is not only a critical part of the Canadian healthcare system but also a strategic pathway for IMGs (International Medical Graduates) to strengthen their profiles and integrate meaningfully into the Canadian medical landscape.

Why Research

Benefits of Having Research Experience

Get Your Name on Publications

Contribute to peer-reviewed research and build a scholarly track record that supports your Canadian medical career.

Stronger CaRMS Applications

Some residency programs give significant weight to research work, especially in Canadian institutions.

Job Opportunities

Roles such as Research Assistant or Associate can offer both professional experience and financial stability while you pursue licensure.

Professional Integration

Research helps IMGs network with Canadian clinicians, researchers, and potential referees who can support your career.

Understanding the System

Exposure to ethics boards, patient populations, and local data deepens your knowledge of Canada's healthcare systems.

With Experience

I Have Previous Research Experience. What Should I Do?

  • Explore research job postings on hospital, university, or research institute websites
  • Volunteer or paid positions such as: Clinical Research Assistant, Clinical Research Associate, Research Coordinator, Clinical Trials Monitor
  • Submit your CV through our IMG Research Intake Form so we can help match you to research opportunities or mentorship

Without Experience

I Do Not Have Previous Research Experience.

  • Identify your interests: Start by choosing an area that excites you — Public Health, Clinical Trials, Global Health, Cancer Research, Mental Health, or Neuroscience
  • Start networking: Reach out to researchers on LinkedIn, attend local or virtual conferences, or join groups like CaRMS prep or IMG research forums
  • Contact professionals: Email Canadian researchers directly, briefly introduce yourself, share your background, and express your interest in volunteering on a project
  • Start learning (even before a formal role): Take free courses on platforms like Coursera, edX, or NIH — look for: Introduction to Clinical Research, Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Data analysis using R or SPSS, Research Ethics in Global Health

Grateful for Compassionate Nest's Support

I had a short time to prepare as a new immigrant with a baby. The Compassionate Nest mocks helped me identify my strengths and weaknesses and exposed me early to the nature of the exam. I'm truly grateful to the compassionate nest group for the tremendous help.
